Planning & Teaching a Workshop

You’re teaching a session — a room (or Zoom) full of people who’ll all launch the same workshop around the same time on orchestraplatform.org. This page is about planning and running that class. You don’t need a cluster or the command line; you do need to coordinate a couple of things with the platform admin ahead of time.

Who does what

On the hosted platform, capacity and monitoring are handled by the platform admin. As an instructor you plan the event and work with attendees through the dashboard UI; the admin warms capacity and watches the cluster. Before the event

1. Confirm your workshop is in the catalog. If it isn’t yet, get it added — see Contribute a Workshop. Do this well ahead of the event, since it goes through review.

2. Check the default duration fits your session length. If a two-hour class needs four-hour sessions, ask the admin to adjust the template.

3. Arrange warm capacity with the admin. A cluster that scales from zero takes a few minutes to add nodes, so if everyone launches at once cold, the first arrivals wait. Tell the admin your expected headcount and start time so they can warm enough capacity beforehand (and scale it back after).

During the event

• Point attendees at the catalog and the Using a Workshop Session guide so they know how to launch, connect, and — importantly — save their work before their session expires.
• If someone’s session is stuck starting or has problems, and it’s not resolving, flag it to the admin.
• Attendees can extend their own session with +1h as the deadline nears.

After the event

Let the admin know the event’s over so they can return warmed capacity to zero.
